Pelosi seeks articles of impeachment, Trump wants speedy end to process

Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, appeared to be in a hurry to remove US President Donald Trump from office as she called for articles of impeachment against him on Thursday.

Pelosi’s request to heads of House committees came a day after the House Judiciary Committee led by Jerrold Nadler heard the views of four constitutional experts on impeachment inquiry against Trump.

The House is proceeding against Trump because he has violated the Constitution, Pelosi said.

In a series of tweets before Pelosi made the announcement, Trump asked Democrats to speed up the impeachment process so he can get a fair trial in the Senate and the country can get back to business.

The Senate vote on impeaching Trump is expected before Christmas.

Democrats are expecting articles of impeachment at Wednesday’s hearing by the House Judiciary Committee.

Explaining Democrats’ stand on the impeachment inquiry, Pelosi said democracy is in peril because the president is trying to win the 2020 election by abusing his power and undermining national security.

Earlier inquiry by the House Intelligence Committee showed that Trump tied the military aid to Ukraine and a meeting with its president Volodymyr Zelensky to the announcement of a probe by Kyiv into his political rival, Joe Biden, Pelosi said.

The articles of impeachment will try to establish that Trump abused his power by committing bribery, obstructing justice and obstructing Congress.

Earlier, Trump tweeted that he wanted House Intelligence Committee chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, Biden, Pelosi and others to stand exposed as part of a corrupt system he is trying to clean up.

After the Mueller inquiry proved nothing, Democrats are attempting to impeach the president by questioning his “perfect” phone conversations with Zelensky. Impeachment inquiry is initiated sparingly and for important issues. The present probe indicates Democrats will henceforth use impeachment routinely to attack future presidents, Trump wrote.

Republicans have never been more united and Democrats are going to lose the present impeachment battle, he added.

Responding to Pelosi’s call for articles of impeachment, White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted that the Speaker and her fellow Democrats should be ashamed of themselves.

The president’s policies have led to a booming economy and created more jobs and a stronger military, Grisham wrote. Trump’s re-election campaign manager Brad Parscale said that since presidential poll is less than a year away, Democrats should allow Americans to re-elect their leader instead of making efforts to impeach him.
