Egypt without Mo Salah still played an excellent match before Uruguay took the wind out of their sails in the dying moments of the game with a 1-0 win in the Group A World Cup match at Ekaterinburg stadium on Friday.
Uruguayan fans in blue looked tensed up as Egypt held their team to a goalless draw till the 88th minute. Their star players Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani added to their frustration by missing chances. Suarez missed a golden one in the 72nd minute. One free kick by Edinson Cavani hit the post and another powerful free kick by him in the 87th minute was well saved by Egypt’s goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
In the final moments of the match when a goal looked almost impossible, Uruguay earned a god-sent free kick. Centre-back Jose Gimenez (pictured: Credit: Sputnik) headed a Carlos Sanchez shot into the bottom-right corner of the net past the goalkeeper.
Egypt’s key player Mo Salah, who was suffering from a shoulder injury and watching the game from the bench, shook his head dejected.
The Pharaohs will now play Russia on June 19 at St Petersburg.
