The victims are furious and federal officials are clueless after US financier and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein died in an apparent suicide at the high security Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan, above, early on Saturday, multiple reports say.
Attorney General William Barr said some of the worst criminals are lodged at this detention facility and such deaths are rare there.
The alleged suicide raises serious questions, Barr said.
Besides FBI, the inspector general is investigating the death of Epstein who was found hanging by his neck in his cell at 6.30am. He was pronounced dead after being taken to a Manhattan hospital an hour later.
Ben Sasse, a Republican member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, in a letter to Barr, said officials responsible for the safety of the man in custody should be sacked as they let his dark secrets die with him.
For some unknown reason, Epstein, 66, facing up to 45 years in jail for child sex trafficking was taken off suicide watch after he was found lying on his cell floor with neck injuries on July 23.
Since then, he should have been under constant watch, several lawmakers said. According to rules, jail guards are expected to check on all prisoners every 15 minutes.
Former top federal prosecutor Preet Bharara said video footage of CCTV cameras at the detention facility could show what exactly happened at Epstein’s cell between Friday night and early Saturday.
One of Epstein’s victims sent a text message to her attorney saying she and others are angry and deeply hurt that they will never see him face justice for his crimes.
Social media was inundated with conspiracy theories with some users pointing their fingers at Bill Clinton who had allegedly taken trips on Epstein’s plane.
Some even said the man wheeled into the Manhattan hospital did not look like Epstein.
Epstein’s death comes a day after a Manhattan judge unsealed statements submitted by Epstein’s former employees, friends and victims.
They revealed how he assaulted girls in his Manhattan mansion and his waterfront complex in Palm Beach, Florida, between 2002 and 2005.
One of his alleged victims, Virginia Giuffre, claimed he forced her to sleep with Britain’s Prince Andrew, former senator George Mitchell of Maine, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and investment banker Glenn Dubin.
More than a decade ago, Epstein had spent 13 months in a Florida jail after entering guilty plea of providing clients with underage prostitutes.
In July this year, President Trump’s labour secretary, Alexander Acosta, resigned for his role in the guilty plea that let off the sexual predator with a lighter sentence.
Epstein was arrested on July 6 at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey and detained without bail.
