Sacked Vice President Mnangagwa returns home to replace Mugabe

Harare: Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom Zimbabwe’s former President Robert Mugabe sacked as vice-president, has returned to the country to replace him, state broadcaster Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation said.
Mnangagwa is set to be sworn in on Friday.
The dismissal of Mnangagwa, known as “the crocodile” for his ruthlessness, and Mugabe’s plan to elevate his wife Grace Mugabe to the country’s top post had angered the ruling Zanu-PF party as well as the military. It led to the beginning of the end of Mugabe’s 37 years of rule.
As Mugabe resigned on Tuesday, jubilant lawmakers welcomed the decision and dropped impeachment proceedings against him.
In the streets, people were singing and dancing to celebrate the end of a dictatorship.
Mnangagwa will serve the rest of Mugabe’s term until elections in September next year.
