London: Prince Harry and his bride-to-be, American actress girlfriend Meghan Markle, stepped out in public on Monday afternoon after Clarence House announced they are engaged and will marry next spring.
Smiling for cameras and holding hands, the couple appeared briefly before world media in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace. As cameras rolled, Markle showed off her diamond engagement ring.
Asked whether she was the “one” the moment they met, Prince Harry said it was love at first sight. Harry said he is “thrilled” to be marrying her.
Earlier, as the Royal family and Markle’s parents congratulated the couple, Clarence House said details of the wedding would be announced in due course. The couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
Harry, 33, fifth in line to the throne, and Marple, 36, were secretly engaged this month in London after a 16-month relationship that began in summer last year.
The two made a public appearance in September this year at a function in Toronto’s City Hall. In an interview with Vanity Fair the same month, Markle spoke about her relationship with Harry.
Media had not been kind to Marple when the news about her relationship with Harry became public. Some reports and opinion pieces called her a racist. Markle’s father is Caucasian and her mother is African-American.
Prime Minister Theresa May offered her “very warmest congratulations” to the couple.
Markle is best known for her role in the TV drama ‘Suits’.
