Mexico quake spares lives but chopper kills 13 survivors on ground

Thirteen earthquake survivors camping in a field after their homes were destroyed were killed when a military helicopter crash-landed (pictured: Photo Credit – Mexico News Daily) on the van in which many of them were resting in Santiago Jamiltepec. Five women, four men, and three children died on the spot while another victim died en route to hospital. Fifteen others on the ground were injured. The UH-60 Black Hawk military helicopter was carrying Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete and Oaxaca State Governor Alejandro Murat to the epicentre of an earthquake that hit Mexico late on Friday when the pilot lost control of the plane before landing. The two dignitaries escaped without any injuries. The 7.7 magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico did not kill anyone but some buildings were damaged. The quake struck at 5.39 pm (2339 GMT) at a relatively deep 24.7 kilometres.
