Indian Opposition’s move to impeach chief justice rejected

The chairman of India’s upper house (Rajya Sabha) of Parliament Venkaiah Naidu on Monday rejected an opposition move to impeach the chief justice of India. The quick decision taken by him after consulting 12 legal luminaries will remove any uncertainty over the smooth functioning of the country’s top court. The legal experts found the Congress-led impeachment move immature, misguided, dangerous and politically motivated. This will be a big setback for the Opposition, especially the Congress party. Naidu also found that the Opposition violated the upper house guidelines by revealing the charges against the chief justice before the impeachment motion was admitted by the chairman of the upper house. The quick decision by Naidu took the Opposition by surprise. Commenting on the impeachment move, member of Parliament Subramanya Swamy said it was a suicide move by Congress.
