Insensitive remarks on health issues by a minister in India’s Assam state has kicked up a row. Addressing teachers at a function in Guwahati, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said some people suffer from life-threatening diseases like cancer because of sins committed in the past and he called it “divine justice”. Sarma, who was a Congress leader, joined the pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party last year. Denouncing Sarma’s remarks, Congress leader P Chidambaram tweeted “that is what switching parties does to a person”.
