Austins bar shooter gets 3 life terms for killing Indian engineer

A gunman who attacked two Indians at a bar in Olathe, north-eastern Kansas, thinking they were Iranians and killed one of them was sentenced by a US federal court to three consecutive life prison sentences on Tuesday. They were in addition to another life sentence 53-year-old Adam W. Purinton had received for first-degree murder in a district court. The fatal shooting happened on February 22, 2017, at Austins Bar & Grill. Srinivas Kuchibhotla (pictured – Credit: Kuchibhotla family Via, an Indian expatriate who worked as an engineer for Garmin, was having drink with an Indian co-worker Alok Madasani after work. Purinton, who was also drinking, thought they were Iranians and started shouting at them to get out of the country. Others in the bar intervened and Purinton was forced out of the bar. He came back later with a handgun, fired at Kuchibhotla and Madasani and fled. Ian Grillot, one of the patrons who chased Purinton, was shot at. Kuchibhotla died while Madasani and Grillot survived. Purinton was arrested from another bar in Clinton, Missouri, where he told a bartender that he was on the run after gunning down “two Iranians.” Sunayana Dumala, wife of Kuchibhotla,  did not attend the court proceedings on Tuesday as she said it was too painful for her to face the shooter in person.
