American Media to investigate Bezos’ extortion claims

American Media Inc led by its chairman and CEO David Pecker, who made payments on behalf of Donald Trump to suppress negative stories about him during the 2016 campaign, will thoroughly investigate Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ extortion claims, US media reports.

Bezos, above, who also owns The Washington Post, said in a blog on Thursday that American Media tried to extort him into making a favourable statement on The National Enquirer to stop them from publishing sexually explicit photos of him.

After accessing private text messages of Bezoz, The National Enquirer last month reported of his extramarital affair with a former news anchor Lauren Sanchez. The expose led to his divorce with Mackenzie after 25 years of marriage.

Prosecutors will examine whether American Media violated the terms of a three-year non-prosecution deal with prosecutors as part of a probe into 2016 campaign finance violations.

Under the deal, American Media had admitted that it paid hush money to former Playboy model Karen McDougal who claimed she had an affair with Trump.

American Media said it will investigate Bezos’ extortion claims.
