166 missing after ferry sinks in Indonesia’s Lake Toba

At least 166 passengers were missing after a crowded ferry capsized due to bad weather in Indonesia’s Lake Toba around 5.30pm on Monday. During rescue operation, 18 passengers were saved and one body was recovered. Authorities believe the ferry was operating without licence and it was carrying passengers three times its capacity. Some survivors said they were not issued tickets while boarding the boat. Lake Toba on the island of Sumatra is a major tourist destination. It has been drawing hordes of tourists since Friday as people in the Muslim-majority nation were enjoying a long holiday starting with Eid celebration. Lake Toba may be granted UNESCO Geopark status which would give it a certain amount of protection from the United Nations.
