66 killed as Iran plane crashes into mountain

All 66 aboard an Iranian domestic plane were killed when it crashed into Dena Mountain in the Zagros range on Sunday, officials said.

Aseman Airlines flight EP3704 from Tehran to Yasuj in Isfahan province crashed about 23 kilometres (14 miles) from its destination after leaving Mehrabad airport around 0800 (0430 GMT), said Mohammad Tabatabai, the airlines’ spokesman.

The plane was carrying 60 passengers, including one child, and six crew.

Jalal Pooranfar, regional head for Iran’s emergency services, said a helicopter carrying rescue and relief teams could not reach the crash site because of snow and blizzard,

However, teams are being sent by land and five of them have reached the area. But they have not spotted anything so far, said Pooranfar.

The Relief and Rescue Organisation of Iran’s Red Crescent said it had also sent 12 teams to the region.
